Lead Engineer

About the role

We're looking for a Lead Engineer with outstanding technical ability who has led an engineering team, remains deeply hands-on, and uses AI effectively to build and ship.

Responsibilities

  • Technical direction: Make architecture decisions, assess trade-offs, and build systems that remain reliable as requirements evolve.
  • Hands-on engineering: Write, review, test, and debug production code. Take responsibility for the quality of what ships.
  • Team leadership: Break complex problems into deliverable work, mentor engineers, review code, and take responsibility for the team's delivery.
  • AI-assisted development: Direct coding agents through substantial engineering work, provide the right context, and critically review, test, and debug their output.
  • Product delivery: Work closely with healthcare teams to understand their workflows and turn complex requirements into dependable software.

Candidate profile

  • Around five years of experience, with meaningful ownership of complex systems or products in production. We can flex on experience for an exceptional person.
  • Standout ability in mathematics, algorithms, or machine learning. Evidence could include strong mathematics competition results, competitive programming achievements, substantial ML research, or technically demanding ML systems built and deployed.
  • Proven engineering leadership. You have made architecture decisions, mentored engineers, reviewed code, and taken responsibility for delivery. You can explain the team's size, your decisions, and what you personally owned.
  • Excellent use of AI coding tools. You can demonstrate your actual workflow, including how you direct agents, identify incorrect assumptions, test changes, and debug failures. You can explain where your own judgment made the difference.
  • High initiative and sound judgment. You learn quickly, tackle unfamiliar problems independently, and get working systems into users' hands.

Strong academic or company credentials are welcome. Demonstrated ability, personal contribution, and engineering judgment matter most.
